We are celebrating an anniversary: 35 years of MAT
BAUER MAT Slurry Handling Systems is the BAUER Group's specialist for separation, mixing, and pumping technology. The company was founded in May 1990 by Josef Soier – then head of mechanical engineering at Bauer Spezialtiefbau and later managing director of Bauer Maschinen GmbH – together with experienced mechanical engineer Manfred Kleimeier and third partner E. W. Blaschke. The aim was to develop easily transportable batch mixing plants suitable for use on construction sites for the preparation of suspensions for special foundation engineering. The technology available at that time did not meet the economic or technological requirements of practical application.
In the early years, not only mixers and plants for suspension preparation were developed, but also numerous special projects. Activities related to suspension handling for special foundation engineering, tunnel construction, deep drilling technology, and the building materials industry were eventually bundled into MAT Mischanlagentechnik GmbH. To this day, this benefits not only direct customers, but also the companies within the BAUER Group: there is a suitable grouting plant for every KLEMM drilling rig and tailor-made separation and mixing technology for every drilling and cutting unit – all from a single source.
In 2015, MAT Mischanlagentechnik GmbH became a subsidiary of BAUER Maschinen GmbH. The resulting synergies have since enabled a service that meets international standards – and often even exceeds them.
A milestone was reached in 2017 with the entry into the mechanical tunnel boring market with MAT's largest separation plant to date: the BE 2550. It consists of six individual plants and processes up to 2,400 m³ of drilling mud per hour. It was first used in the major Eppenberg Tunnel project in Switzerland.
Since April 2018, the branch has been operating under the name BAUER MAT Slurry Handling Systems – a clear commitment to its affiliation with the BAUER Group. One year later, the impressive construction number “1,000” was reached with the BE 500-C desanding plant.
BAUER MAT also regularly attracts attention at bauma in Munich – the leading international trade fair for construction machinery and technical innovations. In 2019, for example, the newly developed CMS batch mixing plants in compact container design were presented there and successfully launched on the market.
On November 1, 2019, the former Mühlhäuser-Obermann GmbH became part of the BAUER Group. Under its new name, Obermann MAT GmbH, it ideally complements the MAT portfolio with injection and grouting pumps, batch mixing plants, and HDI pumps.
One example of the successful combination of both technologies is the IPA 250-E injection plant, a completely new development presented in 2025 – again at bauma. In addition to this innovation, a new service and product was also presented: the ring exchange (rotor). Furthermore, the CMS50 represented the next generation of mixing technology.
MAT's continued success led XXXX to expand its company and factory premises. The purchase of the neighboring property will enable the production of over 250 machines per year in the future. Logistics have also been modernized – including the addition of the company's own crane and an additional transport vehicle.
In recent years, digitalization has also become increasingly important at MAT. Many systems – such as the BE 300, the CMS batch mixing plants, and the IPA 250-E – are already equipped with modules for data collection and evaluation. A digital solution for optimizing machine utilization has already been successfully implemented at a customer site. It helps to minimize downtime on the construction site and significantly improve the response times of MAT's service department.
In addition to digitalization, sustainability also plays a key role. Diesel-powered equipment is being phased out, with the focus shifting to energy-efficient machines. Second-life concepts – such as the reconditioning and resale of used machines – are also being successfully tested.
Another strategic success is the introduction of comprehensive supply chain management, which has led to significantly shorter delivery times for standard products.
While MAT focused 90% on special foundation engineering in its early years, the business is now much more broadly based. Special foundation engineering currently accounts for around 50% of sales – with simultaneous growth. Tunnel construction (35%) and building materials and special applications (15%) are becoming increasingly important.
With innovative technology, precise workmanship, and practical expertise, BAUER MAT Slurry Handling Systems continues to play a decisive role in the development of mixing and separation technology. Individual consulting, efficient manufacturing, careful execution management, and efficient service are synonymous with the renowned quality and reliability of the products.
